Olga Shimelis - Sample Preparation:

Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) is an established technique used for sample preparation. It has been proven to be very sensitive, requiring small sample volumes and easily amenable to automation. This talk will review the recent application of both head-space and immersion SPME towards analysis of foods. All SPME methods were run quantitatively. Headspace SPME applications include analysis of ethanol in kombucha, and terpenes in cannabis. Immersion SPME applications, using more durable and rugged overcoated fibers which typically lasted for over 50 extractions, include the analysis of pesticides in tomato sauce, and bisphenol A in canned foods.

Tuesday, August 28th – 1:00pm – 1:30pm – Birchwood Ballroom

Derrell Johnson – Reference Materials:

From potency evaluation to quality control testing of natural products, reference standards are a critical component of the laboratory’s quality system. Reference standards are offered across different quality grades from Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) to analytical standards. Along with the different quality grades of reference standards, the disparate terminologies between pharmaceutical (compendial) and non-pharmaceutical (ISO) reference standards can lead to confusion in determining the best fit-for-purpose reference for the specific testing application. In this presentation, the differences among Reference Materials, Certified Reference Materials, Primary Standards, and Compendial Standards will be discussed as well as how each are manufactured and where each fits best within the analytical testing workflow. Certification and testing examples using natural products will be provided.
