DNA Repair Regulators

DNA is constantly subjected to damage by a variety of factors, but luckily cells have a number of mechanisms to detect and repair the damage caused by UV light, ionizing radiation, chemicals, free radicals, or normal DNA replication. DNA damage may include single-strand breaks, double-strand breaks, and DNA crosslinkage. A cell with a large amount of DNA damage can become dormant, die, or undergo unregulated cell division, which can lead to tumors and cancer.Repair processes include Base Excision Repair (BER), Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER), and Mismatch Repair (MMR). Repair processes are mediated by several key enzymes and use the unmodified complementary strand of the DNA or the sister chromatid to recover the original information. Deficiencies in DNA repair underlie many human genetic diseases, including cancer. Identifying and understanding DNA repair regulators is important for gaining new insights into cancer development and treatment. Sigma-Aldrich offers several enzyme inhibitors and other small molecules to investigate the cellular machinery responsible for DNA repair.
