The cell cycle controls replication and apoptosis, prevents uncontrolled cell division (tumor formation), and may involve detection and repair of damage to DNA. A conserved set of cyclin-dependent protein kinases (Cdks) initiate or regulate events through phosphorylation of intracellular proteins, thus controlling cell cycle progression, terminal differentiation, and apoptosis. Cdks bind to cyclins and form the maturation-promoting factor which phosphorylates multiple proteins at different stages of the cell cycle.
