Beaded Materials

Beaded materials are a class of engineered powders that are processed into smooth, spherical particles with lower surface areas relative to traditional powders. These free-flowing powders are ideal for controlled atmosphere processes, reducing water absorption and minimizing caking, dusting, and static buildup. Granular materials provide several advantages over fine powders, including increased crucible packing densities as well as lower volatility in high temperature solid-state processes. Additionally, beads can be delivered into narrow sample chambers through pneumatic loading, preventing settling and clogging issues associated with fine powders.

Applications for high-purity anhydrous inorganics include the use of rare earth halides (CeCl3 and YCl3) for scintillation and radiation detection as well as in the preparation of luminescent materials.1-3 Beaded materials have also been used in the synthesis of Li-ion conductive materials (LiI) and in the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells (Iodine).4-5

Aldrich-produced beads conform to specifications with high purities (99.9 - 99.999%), low water content, and a high degree of monodispersity (i.e. tight d50). Ultra-dry, high-purity salts are packaged under inert conditions and sealed in glass or quartz ampules. In-house expertise with beading technology also allows for the production of multi-component solid solutions and eutectics, such as CsCl/NaCl, 2:1 and LiCl/KCl, 1:1.6
