Analysis Note Undecenoic acid is an eleven-carbon monounsaturated fatty acid and is naturally found in the body. It is used as a topical antimicrobial in the following forms; powder, ointment or spray. It treats a wide variety of skin infections that are caused by fungus; jock itch, athlete’s foot, diaper rash or itching, burning in the groin area. This method demonstrates free undecenoic acid for detection without the use of any derivatization reagents. Acetonitrile is most effective at solvating the free undecenoic acid without dissociating zinc undecylenate and thus provides discrimination based on differential solubility. Chromatogram doesn′t indicate any excipient interferences.
