Standard Test Method for Total Mercury Concentration in Water

ASTM® D3223-17 is used to determine mercury concentration in water via cold vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (CV-AAS). This test method is applicable for measuring mercury ion concentrations between 0.5 to 10.0 μg Hg/L in fresh water, saline water, and some industrial and sewage effluents. If water samples are from untested matrices, the user must ensure method validity prior to testing. Concentrations of organic mercury compounds can also be measured with ASTM® D3223-17, but they must be converted to mercury ions via oxidation prior to analysis. ASTM® D3223-17 can also be used to measure mercury concentration in solid samples (e.g., sediment, tissue samples, biological materials), if the samples undergo digestion and oxidation procedures prior to dissolution and analysis.
