Standard Test Methods for Microscope Sizing of Particle Contamination in Aerospace Fluids

ASTM® F312-08 outlines methods for the visual determination of particle contamination in aerospace fluids, gases, surfaces, and environments. These microscope-based techniques are used to determine the size distribution and quantity of particles and are not suitable for particles less than 5 μm in size. Particle size can be determined by two different methods, either by measuring their longest dimension or by the diameter of a circle whose area is equal to the projected area of the particle. After sample filtration, the membrane is positioned in suitable holder on imaging system stage (microscope) and all particles are counted according to size or size categories using a calibrated reticle. All results from ASTM® F312-08 are subject to variables inherent in any statistical method, and may vary greatly based upon instrumentation as well as sample acquisition, handling, and preparation.   • General filtration glassware (or stainless-steel filtration equipment) and accessories
  • Chemically compatible membrane with pore size no greater than half the smallest particle size (most commonly 0.45 µm or 0.8 µm MCE)
