The illicit drug market is dynamic with new drugs of abuse constantly appearing. In addition to synthetic cannabinoids and synthetic cathinones, recent emerging drugs of abuse include new analogs of benzodiazepines, opioids, and amphetamines as well as natural or synthetic hallucinogens from Kratom and PCP derivatives to phenethylamines. The fast pace of emerging drug introductions presents major challenges to the analytical testing laboratory in sourcing Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for development of new methods and identification of new compounds.
