Working Together to Advance Neuroscience Research

Jason Apter, Head of Research Solutions at MilliporeSigma, discusses the company’s approach to neuroscience research. MilliporeSigma is the life science business of Merck KGA, Darmstadt, Germany. Essentially it brings together the legacy EMD Millipore business with the Sigma-Aldrich business to create one of the leading life science companies within the industry. It is located in 66 different countries, with over 19,000 employees and over 300,000 products with 65 manufacturing sites around the world, 130 distribution centers and one of the world’s leading e-commerce platforms.

In the research community, there are four things that really make MilliporeSigma different. First is its very broad and relevant range of solutions and tools for the research community to help with neuroscience. Second is its incredibly broad and geographically dispersed go-to-market model. MilliporeSigma can reach almost every scientist around the world. The third is its ability to get products to customers and leverage a fantastic, integrated supply chain organization that has the ability to really get customers what they want when they want it. At the Society for Neuroscience show, MilliporeSigma presented a three-pillar framework. The first neuroscience pillar is Development. It is solutions to help neuroscientists create and grow their models. Products such as MilliporeSigma’s gene editing suite and its overall cell culture tools and cell lines allow neuroscientists to do this. The second pillar is the Detect pillar. It’s the ability to manipulate and detect the models that neuroscientists have created. Products such as MilliporeSigma’s bioactive small molecules, antibodies, and products for protein to protein interactions such as Duolink™ allows researchers to perturb the system and subsequently research what is happening. Last is its Discover pillar. It’s the ability to help neuroscientists discover biomarkers within neuroscience. It is founded in two platforms: the Milliplex Multiplex platform as well as Small Molecule Counting (SMC) technology which is a high sensitivity, high dynamic range platform to really find protein biomarkers that couldn’t be detected previously. MilliporeSigma’s end mission is to really collaborate with the science community and to be relevant within neuroscience.
