General description

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a water dispersible sodium salt of carboxy-methyl ether of cellulose that forms a clear colloidal solution. It is a hygroscopic material that has the ability to absorb more than 50% of water at high humidity. It is also a natural polymeric derivative that can be used in detergents, food and textile industries.[1][2]

Application

CMC can be used to stabilize palladized iron nanoparticles, which can further be utilized in the dichlorination of contaminated subsurfaces.[3] It may also be used as a polymeric matrix to form a composite with a crystalline nanofibril for the development of sustainable bio-based polymers.[4] CMC can also bind with a hard carbon electrode for the fabrication of sodium ion-batteries.[5]

Questions

1–6 of 6 Questions
  1. Is it suitable for qualitative determination of the cellulolytic activity?

    1 answer
    1. None of the available sources explicitly confirms that this product is suitable forthe qualitative determination of cellulolytic activity. The suitability should be verified for the specific application.

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How do I know the degree of substitution of this product? I want to know for the purpose of my research

    1 answer
    1. The degree of substitution (DS) is not part of the product specifications and not tested on a lot to lot basis. Historical data suggests that the DS of this material is approximately 0.78, with a relative range of 0.65 to 0.90.

  4. What is the molecular weight of this material?

    1 answer
    1. The average molecular weight is approximately 90,000 Da

  5. Is CMC suitable for food applications, is food grade?

    1 answer
    1. This product is intended for research use only and is not suitable for human or veterinary use. Currently, a food grade product option is not available.

      Helpful?

  6. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf
