These test strips are designed for use with the REFLECTOQUANT® RQflex® 20 reflectometer. Calcium and magnesium ions in a sample react with phthalein purple embedded in the reaction zone of the test strip to form a violet dye, which is measured quantitatively using the reflectometer. Each REFLECTOQUANT® test strip product includes a bar code scanned by the reflectometer to load a preset calibrated method. A color indication chart is included only with the colorimetric versions of the Total Hardness Test Strips.

Method: reflectometric with test strips 0.1 - 30.0 °d Reflectoquant®
The Reflectoquant total hardness test strips can be used to measure water hardness. The hardness (total hardness) is due to its content of salts of the alkaline earth metals calcium, magnesium, strontium, and barium (“hardening constituents”, later compounds only in traces). The reaction zones of the test strip, which are impregnated with differing amounts of Titriplex III, assume a green to red color, depending on the hardness of the water sample. The color is then determined reflectometrically on the RQflex® 20. For pre-testing a sample in an economic and quick way to estimate the hardness and a possible dilution factor prior to using this quantitative method we recommend our semi-quantitative MQuant test strips for total hardness. Further quantitative determination methods can be found with our Spectroquant tests.
