General description

Dodecyl sulfate sodium or sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is an ionic detergent comprising a polar sulfate head group and a hydrophobic 12-carbon chain.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Dodecyl sulfate sodium or sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) combines effectively with the positively charged and hydrophobic residues of proteins using sulfate groups and alkyl chains. This detergent is very valuable in the field of structural biology and protein folding/unfolding studies. SDS can initiate the generation of α-helices in a protein structure. It stimulates cooperative unfolding in proteins like bovine serum albumin (BSA), β-lactoglobulin, α-lactalbumin, and hen egg-white lysozyme structures at elevated concentrations.
