General description

BG11-Broth is a universal medium designed for the culture and maintenance of cyanobacteria. The medium is formulated with sodium nitrate as the primary nitrogen source, while dipotassium hydrogen phosphate provides essential phosphate. Magnesium sulphate and calcium chloride dihydrate supply essential mineral salts, and sodium carbonate maintains the alkaline environment required for cyanobacterial growth. Disodium magnesium EDTA acts as a chelating agent, citric acid serves as an organic acid supplement, and ferric ammonium citrate provides the iron necessary for photosynthetic processes. Cyanobacteria cultured in this medium require indirect light, as direct sunlight can be detrimental; exposure to horticultural neon lighting over 24 hours is recommended. The cultures proliferate well at normal room temperatures of approximately 20°C.

Application

BG-11 is an universal medium for the cultivation and maintenance of blue green algae (cyanobacteria), such as Synechocystis 6803; Nostoc sp. PCC 9104 and Nostoc sp. PCC 9025. It is used for studies of the photosystems, as well as to identify the primary targets of the photoprocess.
