Lentinan is a β-(1,3)-glucan with β-(1,6) branches, extracted primarily from shiitake mushrooms and used in medicine and dietary supplements. It exhibits potential antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-diabetic, neuroprotective, and antioxidant properties. Lentinan acts as a biological response modifier and immunostimulant, improving intestinal barrier integrity by enhancing tight junction proteins, restoring redox balance, and reducing serum lipopolysaccharide levels. Lentinan modulates cell signaling and immune responses through β-glucan-responsive receptors like dectin-1, complement receptor 3, lactosylceramide, and TLRs, showing efficacy in treating various conditions including hepatitis, HIV, and certain cancers.
