General description

Albumin, Nitrated (Nitrated BSA), is prepared by chemical modification of bovine serum albumin (BSA) by peroxynitrite. Peroxynitrite (ONOO-), a potent oxidant is an important member of the family of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.[1]

Application

Positive control in immunoblotting assays for Anti-Nitrotyrosine[2] (Sigma Product Number N 0409).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Peroxynitrite promotes the nitration of tyrosine residues in proteins linked, oxidation of redox metal centers, DNA, lipids and nitrosation of cysteine residues in proteins, suggesting that peroxynitrite plays a major role in oxidative cellular damage.[1] Peroxynitrite has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several inflammatory, infectious and degenerative human disease. These include neurological conditions such as Alzheimer′s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the pathogenesis of asthma, atherosclerosis, and a variety of conditions precipitated by endothelial injury.[3]

Physical form

Lyophilized from 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4

Preparation Note

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) nitrated with peroxynitrite.

Analysis Note

Does not contain sodium azide
