Application

L-Tyrosine has been used as a supplement in Dulbecco′s modified Eagle′s medium for culturing SY5Y neuroblastoma cells for stable isotope labeling of amino acids on cell culture (SILAC).[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

L-Tyrosine consists of a polar side chain and is a non-essential amino acid. It is utilized by cells to synthesize proteins that are involved in signal transduction. L-Tyrosine acts as a receiver of phosphate groups that are transferred by kinases.[2][3]

Features and Benefits

  • Suitable for Cell Culture and Biochemical research
  • High-quality compound suitable for multiple research applications

General description

L-Tyrosine, an essential amino acid, plays a vital role in biochemical and cell culture research. In biochemical studies, L-Tyrosine is significant as a precursor to neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, which influence cellular communication and play a role in mood, attention, and energy levels. It also contributes to the synthesis of thyroid hormones, regulating metabolic processes. L-Tyrosine is employed to support cell growth and protein synthesis, facilitating experiments on cell maintenance and repair, making it a valuable tool in biochemical and cell culture investigations.

Other Notes

Amino acid precursor of dopamine and other catecholamines

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How to make 50mM stock solution with pH around 7 for cell culture? Is it even possible? There were large amount of precipitation everytime when I tried to adjust the pH...

    1 answer
    1. L-tyrosine has a very low solubility (0.45 mg/ml) in water at neural pH. To prepare a stock solution, L-tyrosine is dissolved at an extreme pH, either below pH 2 or above pH 9. It can also be dissolved in organic solvent such as DMSO with higher solubility.

L-tyrosine disodium salt dihydrate has a much better solubility (100 mg/ml) when compared to L-tyrosine. To avoid introducing pH shock, un-wanted solvent, or high salt into the medium, dipeptides that contain L-tyrosine, such as glycyl-L-tyrosine, are a reliable replacement when high concentrations of L-tyrosine are required.

  3. How can I solubilise this product

    1 answer
    1. As listed in the 'PROPERTIES' section, this product is soluble in 1 M HCL at 25 mg/mL.

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf
