General description

Magnesium chloride is a white crystalline solid which is soluble in water and alcohol. It has cubic close packing structure with alternate layers of octahedral holes occupied by Mg2+ ions. It is widely used in the field of solar cells and batteries.

Application

Magnesium chloride can be used:
  • To fabricate passivated ZnO nanoparticles as electron transport layer for PbS quantum dot solar cells. This will reduce the cell defects and significantly improves efficiency.
  • To prepare dual salt electrolyte for hydrid Mg/Li rechargeable batteries to enhance ionic conductivity.
  • As a dopant to prepare Mg doped TiO2 electron transport layer for low-temperature processed planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells. Mg doping significantly helps to enhance the power conversion efficiency of solar cells.

Disclaimer

The appearance of gray/black specks should not affect use.

Questions

1–8 of 8 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. What is the cause of the gray/black specks and gray color when dissolved in pure water? Solutions become clear after filtering.

    1 answer
    1. This anhydrous Magnesium chloride reacts with water to make Magnesium hydroxide and/or Magnesium oxide, which are grey or black in color. The precipitate can likely be dissolved by adding a few drops of hydrochloric acid. Or, as was noted in the question, the precipitate can be removed by filtration. For making aqueous solutions of Magnesium chloride, the use of Magnesium chloride hexahydrate is generally recommended.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. How do I store MgCl2 solution, once it's dissolved in water?

    1 answer
    1. When filter sterilized, this product may be stored at room temperature for up to 2 years, provided no contaminants are introduced. Please see the link below to review the product datasheet for item M1028, a prepared 1M solution:
      https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/product/documents/206/954/m1028pis.pdf

      Helpful?

  5. Would it be suitable for biochemical applications, such as preparing a buffer solution for bacterial treatment? Or would it be preferable to order a ready-to-use 1M solution (ex. M1028)?

    1 answer
    1. Product M8266 can be used in buffer preparation. The salt can be selected if you require a solution at a specific concentration that is not commercially available. This would require you to also have access to a suitable water source. If you decide to choose a solution this would reduce your preparation time. It is necessary to determine if a specific volume and concentration is required for the intended application.
