Description

General description

Phenol is an aromatic alcohol. Various industrial processes for the synthesis of phenol have been proposed.[1] It can undergo oxidation in the presence of Fentons′ reagent in aqueous solution.[2]

Application

Phenol may be employed in the following studies:

• Isolation of deoxyribonucleic acid from Bacillus subtilis.[3]
• Berthelot color reaction for the estimation of ammonia.[4]
• Preparation of phenetole (aromatic ether)[5] and 1,2-dihydroxybenzene (catechol).[6]
• Synthesis of phenoxyacetic acid.[7]

Phenol may be used in the following processes:

• As a phase-transfer catalyst in electrolyte solutions of lithium-O₂ battery to promote solution phase discharge.[8]
• Preparation of phenol-sulfuric acid reagent for colorimetric determination of total sugar content.[9]
