General description

Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) exhibits strong oxidizing properties.[1] KMnO4 on dissolution in benzene and on complexation with dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6, affords a useful oxidizing reagent. This reagent participates as an oxidant for the oxidation of olefins, alcohols, aldehydes and alkyl benzenes under mild conditions.[2]
Potassium permanganate, a dark violet colored crystalline solid, is a strong oxidizing agent for a wide range of organic compounds.[3][4] It is commonly used as a disinfectant to treat external infections in aquaculture.[5] Corncobs pretreated with alkaline potassium permanganate solution showed high carbohydrate recovery due to the increased enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose.[6] The acidic potassium permanganate acts a chemiluminescence reagent for the determination of organic compounds.[7]

Application

Layered MnO2 with very promising characteristics for battery applications is produced by thermal decomposition of KMnO4.[8]
Potassium permanganate may be employed as an oxidizing agent in the synthesis of the following:
  • sulfonal (2,2-bisethylsulfonyyl)propane[9]
  • cinchomeronic acid (pyridine-3,4-dicarboxylic acid)[10]
  • isonicotinic acid (pyridine-4-carboxylic acid)[11]
  • manganese(IV) sulfate[12]
Potassium permanganate may be used as an oxidant for the conversion of aromatic aldehydes to corresponding amides in liquid ammonia.[13]
Suitable for heterogeneous oxidations.

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers.
