Application

Ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid has been used:
  • in Dulbecco′s phosphate-buffered saline (DPBS) to induce the weakening of cell-to-cell junctions
  • as an extracellular calcium chelator to study the role of calcium in axonal mitochondria degeneration
  • as a component in lysis buffer for lysing mouse mucosal cells for western blot analysis

A chelating agent useful for the determination of calcium in the presence of magnesium.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA) can chelate calcium (Ca2+) at a ratio of 1:1. It serves as an anti-coagulant when dissolved at 1 g per 100 ml of blood. EGTA can prevent the vesicular release in the nanodomain of single Ca2+ channels. This metal chelator can inhibit the activity of pseudolysin.
Ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid A is a chelating agent used for the determination of calcium in the presence of magnesium.
