Application

Dexamethasone has been used as a component of osteogenic differentiation medium.[1][2][3] It has also been used to study apoptosis, cell signaling pathways and gene expression.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Dexamethasone has immunosuppressant and antiemetic properties. It is used to treat postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV).[4] Dexamethasone plays an important role in cardiac transplant, sepsis, cancer and other pathologic disorders. It elevates the level of heat shock proteins.[5] It is an anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid with a range of effects on cell survival, cell signaling and gene expression.

Glucocorticoid anti-inflammatory agent. Regulates T cell survival, growth, and differentiation. Inhibits the induction of nitric oxide synthase.

Preparation Note

To prepare 20 μg/ml stock solution: add 1 ml absolute ethanol; gently swirl to dissolve; add 49 ml sterile medium while mixing.

    1. They are the same except for the sterility. D8893 has been g-irradiated, so it is sterile. The D4902 is not necessarily sterile. Both are cell culture tested by Sigma.
