Beschreibung

General description

Balanced Salt solutions (BSS) are essential in cell culture as they serve as irrigating, transporting, and diluting agents to maintain the osmotic balance between intra-and extracellular spaces. They provide cells with water, inorganic ions, and energy for normal cell metabolism. BSS also provides a buffering system to maintain the medium within the optimum pH range (7.2-7.6).

Application

Hanks′ Balanced Salt has been used:

in the preparation of stock solution for culturing mice primary hepatocytes
to measure the mineralized nodule formation in human osteoblast cultures
in the preparation of embryo buffer to collect zebrafish eggs

Preparation Note

Formulated to contain 9.8 grams of powder per liter of medium.

Supplement with 0.35 g/L sodium bicarbonate.

Other Notes

The pH is adjusted after addition of sodium bicarbonate.
