L-Glutamine is an essential amino acid that is a crucial component of culture media that serves as a major energy source for cells in culture. L-Glutamine is very stable as a dry powder and as a frozen solution. In liquid media or stock solutions, however, L-glutamine degrades relatively rapidly. Optimal cell performance usually requires supplementation of the media with L-glutamine prior to use.
General description
L-glutamine is found to be one of the most abundant amino acid in blood stream.[1] It is useful in a number of biochemical processes like production of other amino acids, glucose, nucleotides, protein, and glutathione.[1] It may also be used as a supplement to increase the intestinal villous height, maintain mucosal integrity and stimulate gut mucosal cellular proliferation.[1] It may also find applications in the treatment of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, since it has the tendency to suppress gut and oral-toxic side effects.[1]
