Sodium acetate is suitable for use as a buffer in:

• protein crystallization[1]
• staining of gels in protein gel, electrophoresis, neutralization buffer for chromatography[2]
• the preparation of standard (acetylcholine chloride) for hestrin assay[3]
• substrate screening characterization for microfluidic microbial fuel cell array[4]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sodium acetate anhydrous is commonly used in molecular biology applications. This serves as a buffering agent in the DNA digestion experiments by ensuring the reaction has optimum pH.[5] In general sodium acetate is preferred in purification, precipitation, crystallization, and other applications which require tight control of elemental content. Sodium acetate is extensively used as a retardant in plastics manufacturing, as a mordant in dyeing, and in the tanning of leather.
