General description

Cellulose acetate (CA) is a class of cellulose based esters which can be produced by a reaction of cellulose with acetic acid and acetic anhydride. It can be used in a variety of forms such as films, membranes, and fibers. It can be used as a biodegradable polymer in medical and automotive applications.[1]

Application

CA can be used as a material in packaging, clothing and pharmaceuticals industries.[2] It can also be used in the formation of polymeric electrolyte for the fabrication of electrochemical devices like fuel cells, solar cells and supercapacitors.[3]

Features and Benefits

  • High purity grade , biodegradable suitable for demanding industrial and research applications.
  • High Molecular weight for enhanced strength, film forming properties and adhesion
  • Offered in powder form easy to handle, measure, and dissolve.
  • Low moisture content ensures stability and prevents hydrolysis during storage and processing.
  • The refractive index makes it suitable for lenses, coatings, and display technologies.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. Please indicate the unit of the number average molecular weight (Mn) of Cellulose acetate (CA) in powdered form (average Mn ~50,000 by GPC, Sigma Aldrich).

    1 answer
    1. The units of the molecular weight for this product is Da.

      Helpful?

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. What is the degree of acetylation of this product?

    1 answer
    1. This compound is highly acetylated. The specification sheet shows that it is between 39.20 and 40.20 percent acetyl groups by weight:
      https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/specification-sheets/376/778/419028-BULK_______ALDRICH__.pdf
For each disaccharide group as shown in the structure on the specification sheet, on average, 5 of the 6 R groups are acetyl groups, and only 1 of the 6 is a hydrogen.

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf
