It is also used as a diluent to increase ionic strength in buffers or culture media. Sodium chloride is crucial for maintaining plasma osmolality and the extracellular fluid volume of the body. Excess NaCl leads to increased blood pressure, which has implications for cardiovascular and renal diseases. Sterile NaCl is a component of eye drop solutions. Traditionally, it has been used in high concentrations to preserve food since most bacteria cannot grow in high-salt conditions.
