General description
Croton oil is a toxic viscous liquid extracted from seeds of Croton tiglium. It is pale yellow to brown in color and is transparent in nature. Croton oil has a strong irritant property and is used along with phenol in some chemical peels. It also has a tumor promoting ability.
Croton oil is extracted from Croton tiglium L. It consists of crotonoleic acid, crotonic acid, crotonyl alcohol, crotonyl alcohol bisester and crotonyl alcohol trisester. Croton oil acts as a stimulant in the skin and mucosal inflammation. It is associated with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and skin carcinoma. Croton oil functions as a skin peeling agent.
Application
Croton oil has been used to induce acute skin inflammation.
Croton oil has been used to induce inflammation in mouse ears.
