Opis

General description

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is synthesized and secreted by activated endothelial cells, and is a peptide with potent vasoconstrictor activity. It is a marker for activated or dysfunctional endothelial cells.PMID 25138825 This peptide is one of the three isopeptides belonging to the endothelin family. It is also released by cardiomyocytes.PMID 25099217

Application

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) has been used to study the production and detection of H₂O₂ and production of NO in the presence of ET-1,PMID 15531748 for studying the effects of ET-1 on the eNOS/inducible NOS (iNOS)/caveolin-1 expression, NO production, isoform specific PKC translocation, and PKC activity in human saphenous vein endothelial cells (HSVECs).PMID 16820593

Biochem/physiol Actions

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a vasoconstrictor, which is increased in plasma and explants of patients with uterine leiomyomas. Thus, uterine fibroids are linked to increased ET-1 levels and hypertension, which is worsened by hypoxic condtions.PMID 25138825 ET-1 RNAi and Endostar are capable of preventing the progression and invasiveness of PC-3 (prostate cancer) cells.PMID 25556429 The plasma levels of this peptide are increased in patients with atrial septal defect (ASD), and these levels might help in diagnosis of closure defects.PMID 25099217 The plasma level of ET-1 is also higher in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and this is linked to gradual worsening of pulmonary function tests.PMID 24969188

Endothelin is a potent agonist for ET_A and ET_B endothelin receptors.

Potent agonist for ET_A and ET_B endothelin receptors. Induces the production of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α, and, thus, the production of VEGF.
