General description

BSM Supplement is an antimicrobial supplement used for the selective isolation of Bifidobacteria like Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium infantis. The BSM-Supplement is a mixture of three different antibiotics that are the selective agents and inhibit the accompanying bacterial flora like Bacilli, Enterobacteriacea and Pseudomonas.

Preparation Note

0.116 g des BSM Supplements in 1 bis 5 mL sterilem Wasser verdünnen und gründlich mischen. Das Supplement ist kaum löslich, kann aber als trübe, weisse Suspension zum Medium zugegeben werden. Supplement-Suspension zu 1 Liter sterilem BSM Agar (Fluka® 88517) oder BSM Broth (Fluka 90273) bei 55°C hinzufügen und gründlich mischen.

  1. Is the BSM supplement autoclavable with BSM agar? Or is it heat sensitive? Should I add the supplement before or after autoclaving bsm agar?

    1. This supplement is heat-sensitive and must not be autoclaved. The procedure for preparation of BSM agar is featured in the BSM agar 88517 datasheet: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/product/documents/199/251/88517dat.pdf

      This procedure explains that the BSM agar base is to be autoclaved, while the supplement is to be added after cooldown. The supplement is prepared by adding sterile water, in order to avoid compromising the sterility of the prepared complete medium.
