General description

Betaine is a zwitterionic quaternary ammonium compound and is mainly present in animals, microorganisms and plants. It is one of the main constituent of several food items like wheat, shellfish, spinach and sugar beets. It is also termed as trimethylglycine, lycine, glycine betaine and oxyneurine. Betaine is a methyl derivative of glycine.

Application

Betaine is a methyl group donor that functions in the normal metabolic cycle of methionine. It is a naturally occurring choline derivative commonly ingested through diet, with a role in regulating cellular hydration and maintaining cell function.Betaine in culture medium can effectively reduce the level of ROS.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Als Endprodukt des oxidativen Metabolismus von Cholin ist Betain ein allgemeiner Methyldonator, insbesondere in einem untergeordneten Stoffwechselweg der Methioninbiosynthese. Es wird eingesetzt, um Homozystinurie, ein Defekt im Hauptstoffwechselweg der Methioninbiosynthese, zu behandeln.
