Radikalfänger, der gemeinsam mit Fe²⁺ eingesetzt wird, um NO in Hirn, Niere, Leber und anderem Gewebe nachzuweisen. Die gleichzeitige direkte Messung von NO* und pO₂ wurde beschrieben. Als Kupferchelatbildner wurde es eingesetzt, um Kupfer in biologischen Materialien durch ESR zu quantifizieren sowie als Inhibitor von Superoxiddismutase, Ascorbatoxidase und anderen Enzymen.
