Application
IPTG wird häufig in Klonungsverfahren verwendet, bei denen die Induktion von β-Galactosidase-Aktivität erforderlich ist. Es wird zusammen mit X-Gal oder Bluo-Gal in der Blau/Weiß-Selektion von Kolonien rekombinanter Bakterien genutzt, die die Expression des lac-Operons in Escherichia coli induzieren. IPTG funktioniert durch Bindung an den lacI-Repressor und Veränderung seiner Konformation, was die Unterdrückung des β-Galactosidase-codierenden Gens lacZ verhindert.
