Application

Dimethyl sulfoxide has been used as a component of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) mixture[1] and as PCR facilitator.[2][3]

Disclaimer

Supercools easily and remelts slowly at room temperature. Solidified product can be re-liquified by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.

General description

Dimethyl sulfoxide is a free radical scavenger and a cryopreservant. It elicits protective effect in double stranded breaks(DSBs).[4] Dimethyl sulfoxide (1-10%) has been shown to accelerate strand renaturation and is believed to give the nucleic acid thermal stability against depurination.[2] As a PCR cosolvent, DMSO may help improve yields, especially in long PCR.[5]
