Application

Calf thymus DNA is exceptionally useful as a substrate for DNA polymerase assays, in the amplification of very long fragments and as a carrier DNA for precipitations.
Calf thymus DNA is exceptionally useful as a substrate for DNA polymerase assays, in the amplification of very long fragments and as a carrier DNA for precipitations. It was used as a standard for DNA quantification by fluorescent assay[1] and in DNA-binding assay.[2]

General description

High quality single-stranded template DNA isolated from the thymus of male and female calves.

Preparation Note

Dissolve the DNA gently rocking overnight to a final concentration of 1mg/ml in molecular biology grade water.
One mg DNA is approx. 25 A260 units.
Prepared by a modification of the method of Alberts and Herrick from calf thymus DNA.[3]

    1. Unfortunately, information regarding the reanneal after storing and cooling at room temperature has not been determined.

      Product D8899 is listed as having a length of approximately 50 kb. For single stranded DNA, the molecular weight of one kb is approximately equal to 3.3 × 105 daltons, so 50 kb has a weight of approximately 16.5 × 106 daltons.
