This product is not a 5% iodine solution. This solution is a dilute Lugol’s iodine containing approximately 0.33–0.37% iodine and 0.67–0.71% potassium iodide. The solution may be used to detect starch (produces a blue/black color) and as a staining agent in microscopy for fungal structures and protozoa. Published literature also describes the use of Lugol solution for plant staining and other biological applications.

General description
Lugol solution is a disinfectant, which is used to detect starch in organic compounds. It is used in dental procedures, diagnosis of cervical cell alterations and Schiller´s test. Lugol solution is used in panendoscopic examination of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. It is used as a mordant in Gram staining.
