Das Glykoproteinhormon, das aus einer α-Kette mit 92 Aminosäuren besteht, die der von LH, FSH und TSH entspricht; und einer eindeutigen β-Kette mit 149 Aminosäuren. Wird produziert vom Chorionzottengewebe und ist verantwortlich für die Aufrechterhaltung des Gelbkörpers während der frühen Schwangerschaft. Wird auch von Throphoblastzellenneoplasmen produziert, die sich durch erhabene, freie hCG-β-Ketten und hyperglykosyliertem hCG auszeichnen.
