Application

Alginic acid sodium is used:
  • in combination with chitosan, to fabricate a biodegradable porous scaffold for bone tissue engineering.[1]
  • to study the characteristics of a modified amphiphilic alginate derivative[2]
  • to the study the impact of alginate on the rate of lipid digestion by employing an in vitro digestion model[3]
  • in the preparation of alginate hydrogels[4]
  • as encapsulating agents of microparticles of β-galactosidae[5]

General description

Alginic acid sodium is a gelling and nontoxic anionic polysaccharide. The carboxylic acid groups on the alginic acid chain, renders it insoluble in water. However, converting alginic acid to its sodium form, enables it to solubilize in water easily.[6]

Questions

1–10 of 19 Questions
  1. Is there any toxicity when using this product for cell culture? Also, is there any information on endotoxin concentration?

    1 answer
    1. The product does not undergo testing to determine its suitability for use in cell culture applications. There is no data available characterizing its possible endotoxin concentration.

      Helpful?

  2. What is the molecular weight (average) of this product?

    1 answer
    1. This product is considered a low viscosity Alginate with a published molecular weight range of 12,000 - 80,000 daltons.

      Helpful?

  3. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  4. Kindly let me know the solubility and PKa Values of Alginic acid sodium salt (180947-100G)

    1 answer
    1. This product is assessed for pH and viscosity at 1% in deionized water indicating it is water soluble. The pKa of alginates is generally around 3.2–4.4 based upon details from literature. These details will need to be verified by the end user.

  5. Is the solution made with this at a 1-3 % W/V stable if sterilely filtered and frozen or at a certain temperature does it precipitate? How long would a solution last after preparation at 4 degrees or -20 degrees or -80 degrees? No crosslinking as of yet.

    1 answer
    1. Unfortunately, no solution stability info is available for this product. The empirical result indicates that the lower w/v %, the less possibility for precipitation. The stock solution may remain stable at 4 Degrees. Storage at -20 or -80 Degrees is not recommended since phase separation may occur that reduces the stability of the solution.

  6. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  7. what is the G/M ratio of this product? is G/M>1?

    1 answer
    1. Generally, the G/M ratio is not tested. The approximate amounts are 61% M and 39% G, resulting in an M/G ratio of 1.56. However, since this is not tested for each batch, the value cannot be guaranteed and should be treated as an approximation.

  8. What is the species name of the seaweed from which Product No. 180947 originates?

    1 answer
    1. This product is purified from Phaeophyceae or Brown Algae.

      Helpful?

  9. What is the density of alginic acid sodium salt powder 180947

    1 answer
    1. Unfortunately, the density is not determined for this product.

      Helpful?

  10. WHAT IS THE PURITY OF THE PRODUCT NO. 180947, ALGINIC ACID SODIUM SALT?

    1 answer
    1. The purity is not analyzed on a lot-to-lot basis. This product is a mixture, not a simple compound. The ratio of mannuronic acid to guluronic acid (M/G ratio) is 1.56.
