循环胃饥饿素是主要由胃分泌的多功能激素。 最初发现作为生长激素促分泌素受体的内源性配体，它也是调节能量稳态的食欲刺激激素。 它由28个氨基酸组成，丝氨酸-3位的N-辛酰基化是其生物活性所必需的。 长期以来，胃饥饿素被认为是肥胖症的关键因素，它也可能在维持胰岛素和葡萄糖之间的平衡以及糖尿病的发展方面发挥作用。 进食后胰岛素分泌的峰值通常与胃饥饿素生产减少有关。研究人员确定，在不受控制的糖尿病的大鼠模型中，食物摄入仍然抑制了血液中的胃饥饿素浓度，但只有胰岛素存在时的一半左右。
