General description

Molecular sieve 0.4 nm is a porous solid that can be used in desiccators and drying tubes to dry gases and absolute solvents.

Application

Molecular sieve 0.4 nm can be used as a catalyst:
  • For the conversion of epoxides to thiiranes by treating with thiourea.
  • In the solvent-free acetylation of eugenol with acetic anhydride to synthesize eugenyl acetate.
It can also be used as catalyst support in the copper-palladium bimetallic catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aryl halides with phenylboronic acids to synthesize biphenyls.

  1. How do I know when the beads need to be regenerated? What do the beads look like when they are no longer fit for purpose?

    1. These beads will look the same once saturated with moisture, as they do not include a moisture indicator. It would need to be observed via moisture breakthrough analysis, depending upon the application. 4A molecular sieves such as these can uptake approximately 20% moisture so if they are being used to adsorb moisture from a chemical or stream with a known water content, one could calculate the amount of sieves needed, and regenerate once saturation is reached. Regeneration is typically performed under a nitrogen gas stream for a few hours at ~250-300C.

  2. Hello there, How can I regenerate this product to get rid of the humidity/water? I mean the needed temperature, the time of heating, the indicator of regeneration success, and so on.

    1. The maximum temperature for the thermal reactivation of silica is approximately 300°C. Heat regeneration typically requires a few hours.
