General description

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) can form complexes with phenolics and alkaloids. The complex formation allows removal of phenolics and alkaloids from plant samples, thereby inhibiting any modification of proteins by them and any hindrance they may cause in spectrophotometric determinations of protein content. PVP might also enhances the stability of enzymes.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a multifunctional synthetic polymer, finds utility in life science and biochemical research. This water-soluble polymer is versatile, serving as a stabilizing agent, emulsifier, suspending agent, solubilizing agent, protective colloid, and complexing agent. Its protective colloid properties are particularly valuable in stabilizing proteins, enzymes, and other biological substances.

Application

Polyvinylpyrrolidone has been used in the purification of glutamine synthetases from plant samples. It has been used to block the PVDF (polyvinylidene difluoride) membrane and to avoid nonspecific binding.

Features and Benefits

  • Highly versatile surfactant for your life science and biochemical research
  • Excellent Solubilizing agent and Complexing agent

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. What is the stability for this product after reconstitution in water or medium? Is it possible to keep it at +4°C or aliquot at -20°C? If so, how long?

    1 answer
    1. Solutions of this product in water can be stored at room temperature for up to a year. The solution could also be stored in the refrigerator at 2-8°C, if so desired. But the recommendation would be to NOT freeze the solution, as this might shear the polymer, which would give a lower average molecular weight, and therefore lower viscosity.

      Helpful?

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. I'm interested in using this product for reducing the inhibitory effects of polyphenols during ELISA extraction of walnuts. Do you think this product would help this?

    1 answer
    1. This product has not been tested for reducing inhibitory effects of polyphenols during ELISA extraction of walnuts. However, literature suggests that polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) may be effective, although the molecular weight used is not specified. The reference is: Abiodun A. Ogunjimi, Prabhakara V. Choudary, "Adsorption of endogenous polyphenols relieves the inhibition by fruit juices and fresh produce of immuno-PCR detection of Escherichia coli 0157:H7," FEMS Immunology & Medical Microbiology, Volume 23, Issue 3, March 1999, Pages 213–220.

Contacting the article's author may provide information on the specific product number used in the experiment.

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf
