General description

Azoxymethane (AOM) is a potent laboratory chemical used to study cancer initiation, progression, and prevention, particularly in the colon. It acts as both a carcinogen, triggering tumor formation, and a gene mutation agent, causing specific alterations in DNA.

Application

Azoxymethane (AOM), a gene mutation agent, may be used with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) to create cancer models in laboratory animals which can be used to study mechanisms of cancer progression and chemoprevention.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Carcinogen that induces O6-methylguanine adducts in DNA leading to G→A transitions. Induces tumorigenesis in the colon of laboratory animals and is used to study the mechanism of cancer progression and chemoprevention.

For many products, long-term storage at low temperatures will increase the time during which they are expected to remain in specification and therefore are labeled accordingly. Where short-term storage, shipping time frame, or exposure to conditions other than those recommended for long-term storage will not affect product quality, Sigma-Aldrich will ship at ambient temperature. The products sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than their recommended long-term storage are shipped on wet or dry ice.     1. Azoxymethane is a methylating agent which forms 6-O-methylguanine in DNA.  Unless this methylated base is repaired by cellular enzymes, it results in a base mismatch that subsequently causes tumors in the tissue.
