General description

General description
Chemical structure: tetracycline

Doxycycline hyclate belongs to the second generation of tetracycline antibiotics family. Doxycycline hyclate shows minimal side effects upon usage. It is effective for the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) and promotes speedy recovery.

Application

Doxycycline hyclate has been used for the induction of glioma cells and human embryonic kidney 293T cells (HEK293T).

Doxycycline hyclate is a synthetic oxytetracycline derivative. It has been used to eliminate Borrelia burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in rodent reservoirs and to eliminate Ixodes scapularis ticks. It is a broad spectrum inhibitor used to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), such as type 1 collagenase in studies on wound healing and tissue remodeling.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Doxycycline hyclate inhibits the inflammatory response to the Lyme Disease Spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. It is a broad spectrum inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases in vivo.
Mode of Action: Doxycycline hyclate inhibits the inflammatory response to the Lyme Disease Spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi.

Activity Spectrum: Effective against a broad spectrum inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases in vivo.

Questions

1–5 of 5 Questions
  1. If I have made 50mg/ml solution in water using this doxycycline powder, then where to store that solution?

    1 answer
    1. Aqueous solutions of Doxycycline are light sensitive and should be used within 48 hours. The long term stability of aqueous solutions at -20°C has not been evaluated. However, some published articles indicate that doxycycline remained stable for 7 days in acidified water for 14 days. Another source states that solutions of doxycycline hyclate at a concentration of 10 mg/mL in sterile water, when frozen immediately after reconstitution, are stable for 8 weeks when stored at −20°C. Please see the link below to review one such article. Additional information may be available, consulting the relevant literature is advisable:

  2. Question related to Stephane F's and the answer. I resuspended in DMSO but the solution that I have is slightly yellow is that okay? Also how long does the powder last at 4C?

    1 answer
    1. This product does not have a color specification for the solution upon solubilizing. It is soluble in water (50 mg/ml) and in DMSO (10 mg/ml), yielding a clear solution. Mild warming may be required to fully dissolve the material. If the solution is clear and slightly yellowish, it should be acceptable for use.
The recommended storage temperature for this product is 2–8 °C. If unopened and stored at 4–8 °C, it is guaranteed for 1 year from the date of shipment. Additional information is available in the product datasheet: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/product/documents/402/297/d5207dat.pdf

  3. What temperature should a solution be stored?

    1 answer
    1. As stated in the 'PROPERTIES' section, the recommended storage temperature for this product is 2–8 °C. Please see the link below to review additional information available in the product datasheet:

  4. Is this product suitable for in-vivo use (added to drinking water)? Also what is the difference between this product (D5207) and D9891? thank you

    1 answer
    1. This product is intended for research use only. It is not suitable for human or veterinary use. The material has not been tested in animal models for ingestion. The end user would need to determine suitability. The major difference between product D5207 and D9891 is the testing performed. Product D5207 is tested suitable for cell culture applications. Please see the product specification sheet below regarding testing:
