Gene Information

mouse ... Fas(14102)

General description

Fas is a key component of apoptosis, and is a cell surface receptor. This gene is localized to human chromosome 10q24.1, and is composed of nine exons and eight introns.[1]

Application

Fas/Fc Chimera from mouse has been used as a blocking agent during FACS (flow cytometry).[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Fas and its ligand play an essential role in apoptosis, by activating the cell death signaling pathway. Mutations in this gene are associated with evasion of apoptosis by cells, leading to tumorigenesis, and prevention of clearance of these cells by the immune system.[1] A polymorphism in this gene results in the production of soluble Fas (sFas), which is implicated in the chronic autoimmune disorder called primary Sjögren′s syndrome (pSS).[3]

Physical form

Lyophilized from a 0.2 μm filtered solution in phosphate buffered saline containing 50 μg bovine serum albumin per 1 μg of cytokine.

Analysis Note

Biological activity was measured by its ability to inhibit Fas-ligand induced apoptosis of Jurkat cells.

The CD95/CD95L receptor-ligand system is mainly recognised in the induction of apoptosis. However, it has also been shown that CD95L is over-expressed in many cancer types where it modulates immune-evasion and together with its receptor CD95 promotes tumour growth. Here
