Agarose

Agarose is a polysaccharide derived from agar producing red algae (sea kelp). Structurally it consists of alternating D-galactose and 3,6-anhydro-L-galactopyranose units which form a linear polymer. The agarose polymer forms chains which create fibers that are flexible and form a web of channels with diameters from 50 nm to 200 nm depending on the amount of agarose used. Agarose has several variable properties which make it useful in many applications such as nucleic acid electrophoresis, immunodiffusion techniques, gel plates or overlays for cells in tissue culture, cell culture medium, and affinity chromatography. Sigma-Aldrich offers a wide array of agarose products with varying gel strength, melting temperature, gelling temperature, and EEO.
