General description

Lignin, alkali is a complex, three dimensional polymer that is also known as kraft lignin that has undergone hydrolytic degradation. It is one of the major components of lignocellulosic materials. Lignin is a major product for second generation bioethanol production and is an impurity in the separation of cellulose from wood.[1][2]

Application

Lignin, alkali can be used as a surface treatment agent for composites of natural fibers with petroleum based resins.[3] It can be used as a biosorbent for potential applications in removing toxic metal ions from wastewater.[4]

Over the long term, soil carbon (C) storage is partly determined by decomposition rate of carbon that is slow to decompose (i.e., recalcitrant C). According to thermodynamic theory, decomposition rates of recalcitrant C might differ from those of non-recalcitrant C

Questions

1–10 of 12 Questions
  1. May i know the size of the lignin powder is it in micro or nano size?

    1 answer
    1. The particle size of this product is not determined.

      Helpful?

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. What extraction process is used to precipitate the lignin out of the black liquor? Are there other wood pulp sources other than pine?

    1 answer
    1. Details on the extraction process for this lignin product cannot be shared. This lignin is derived from pine trees. No additional sources are used.

      Helpful?

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  5. Hi. I would like to know if this lignin is 100% pure or not. does it have any differences with alkali lignin 50%? what are the impurities does this lignin can have?

    1 answer
    1. This product is analyzed solely for percentage carbon, sulfur, and pH. The information in archival resources does indicate this to be a highly purified form of lignin, with an expected lignin content of 97% on a dry basis. It is intended to be free of hemicellulosic materials. There are no direct tests for impurities on this item.

  6. What is source used to extract lignin?

    1 answer
    1. This product is extracted from wood pulp, primarily pine

  7. Is any of the 370959 or 471003 products soluble in THF?

    1 answer
    1. Products 370959 and 471003 are alkali lignin items. The 471003 has a 10.5 pH and is generally more soluble and accessible to chemical reactions due to its higher pH. Item 370959 has a pH of 6.5 and may be somewhat less soluble. Lignins are soluble in polar solvents and insoluble in non-polar solvents. THF is a moderately polar solvent. So both products are expected to be
      partially soluble in THF.

Note to UGCMB: Please post to both PDPs

  8. I the alkali lignin crystalline? Does it present diffraction peaks?

    1 answer
    1. Product 370959 is a brown powder. The form of the powder (amorphous or crystalline) is not defined, and the material has not been assayed by x-ray diffraction.

  9. What is the percentage of Sulphur content in lignin 370959

    1 answer
    1. There is no specification in place for sulfur content, however, the lot-specific value can be found on the Certificate of Analysis. A review of the last 5 lots reveals a range of 1.5 - 1.9% sulfur.

  10. What are the differences between this product (Kraft Lignin 370959) and your other variety of Kraft Lignin (471003)?

    1 answer
    1. The primary difference between these two products is the level of alkalinity or pH. The 370959 has a pH range of 5.5-7.5 while the pH range of the 471007 is 10-11. The higher pH lignin products are generally more soluble and accessible to chemical reactions. Both products are tested for Sulfur content, however total Carbon testing is only performed on the 370959. Both products are a by-product of wood pulp production, primarily pine.
