General description

Breathe-Easy® membrane is permeable to oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor, creating separate, highly uniform microculture vessels from a multi-well plate.
The membrane comes as a sandwich. The bottom paper liner protects the adhesive layer, and the top carrier sheet protects the outer surface of the highly compliant membrane until it has been placed and adhered to the plate. The liners also assure sterility of each individual membrane. The adhesive seals every well (unlike molded plastic covers), permitting agitation without cross-contamination or microbial infiltration. Compatible with most caustics and organic solvents, stable from −80 to +100 °C.
Note: Use of the Brayer (Z380067 sold separately) is recommended to assure uniform adhesion and to facilitate removal of the top paper liner.

  1. Does this sealing membrane has one whole surface adhesive?

    1. Yes, one full side this sealing membrane is adhesive, while the other side is not. There is a paper liner inserted between each sheet to protect the adhesive surface.

  2. If the plastic film around the sheets is opened in a non-sterile environment, are these no longer sterile? If so, can they be autoclaved to sterilize them again? What temp is optimal for autoclaving them?

    1. Yes, if the individual wrap is breached in room air, the product should no longer be considered sterile. Many potential contaminants may be airborne. These membranes are sterilized by γ-irradiation and are not autoclavable. Sterilization under UV has not been evaluated.

  3. Is this product optically transparent? Can it be used for luminescence experiments?

    1. This product is distributed on behalf of Diversified Biotech. The films have not been tested for use in luminescence, but are UV transparent to 300 nm.

  4. Hello! We use breath-easy membrane routinely in our lab. I need to test an effect of gas on bacterial growth. for that i want to know what is the permeability of membrane like what is the pore size?

    1. The material has no pores. The oxygen exchange rate is 553.5 cc per 100 square inches per 24 hours. The carbon dioxide exchange rate is 3781 cc per 100 square inches per 24 hours. The water vapor exchange rate is 0.7 kg per square meter per 24 hours.

  5. Ces films sont-ils adaptés pour de la culture cellulaire? Remplacent-ils le couvercle ou doit-on mettre un film (stérile?) et le couvercle de la plaque dessus?

    1. Yes, these sealing films are sterile and suitable for use in cell culture. When in place, a plate lid is not needed. These films allow for the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapors while preventing microbial/viral contamination and well-to-well cross contamination.

  6. Is the Breath-easy sealing meant to be used with or without a lid? does it prevent contamination from leaking in without a lid?

    1. The adhesive seals are meant to be used without a lid. These items provide a secure seal for every well which prevents microbial/viral contamination and well-to-well cross-contamination.

    transparent breath easy sealing membranes for microtiter readers

    We bought the Z380059, Breathe-Easy® sealing membrane to measure the growth curve of aerobic bacteria in microtiter plate. From the description of the product it sounds like this is the application they are sold for and in the picture from the producer the membranes look totally transparent. But when we received the product the membranes were rather opaque and could not be used for cell density reading. We contacted the supplier and received this answer: "The manufacturer of Z380059, Breathe-Easy® sealing membrane, has advised that these films are not transparent. Unfortunately we do not have any sealing films that are both breathable and optically clear."

    superior performance at -80C

    i love this product for its reliable performance, especially at -80 degree C

    A lot of air bubbles and media leaking out on 384 well plates

    We used the Breath-Easy with a plate lid because we were afraid of contamination. When we came on the next day it was a big mess of media leaking out, air bubbles and definitely cross contamination between the wells. Is the Breath-easy sealing meant to be used without a lid? without contamination risk?

      Breathe-Easy® sealing membranes are intended to prevent cross contamination and do not require use of a lid. When applying the seal, take care to press the adhesive to the cell openings to make sure there is a tight seal on each well.
