Is this product supplied sterile? If not, do you have a recommended sterilization protocol for the microplastics, such as ethanol treatment, gamma irradiation, or ethylene oxide?
1 answer-
This product is not supplied sterile. No validated sterilization protocol exists specifically for this product. Polystyrene latex/microparticles can be sterilized by several methods. Autoclaving is not recommended because polystyrene may soften at autoclave temperatures, potentially causing aggregation or changes to particle characteristics. This product has not been evaluated for the presence or removal of microplastics.
Possible approaches to consider (not validated for this product):
70% Ethanol treatment: Incubate in 70% ethanol for ~30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with sterile water or sterile buffer to remove residual ethanol.
UV irradiation: Suitable for very dilute suspensions where UV light can penetrate the sample.
Pasteurization: Heat bead suspension at 70–80°C for 24 hours to reduce microbial contamination.
Gamma irradiation: Reported as a potential sterilization method for latex bead preparations.
Antimicrobial preservatives: Agents such as sodium azide, thimerosal, or formaldehyde may inhibit microbial growth where appropriate for the intended application.
Note: These methods have not been specifically validated for this product. Conduct a small-scale evaluation to confirm sterilization method compatibility with the intended application. How many fluorescent beads (L3280) are in the 1 ml of the product?
1 answer-
The bead count for this product is not a tested specification. As listed in the "Properties" section of the product detail page, the solids constitute 2.5% of the aqueous solution. This specification can also be viewed on the sample Certificate of Analysis: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/certificates/sapfs/PROD/sap/certificate_pdfs/COFA/Q14/L3280-BULKMKCS6365.pdf.
