Application

Daidzein has been used:
  • as a control to evaluate fertility in rats[1][2]
  • to study its effects on ovarian cancer[3]
  • to simulate in vitro antioxidant activity[4]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Daidzein is a phytoestrogen that is suggested to play a role in preventing hormone-induced cancers.[5] Arrests cell cycle at G1 in Swiss 3T3 cells.[6]
Soy isoflavone daidzein protects against oxidative damage in liver cells induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). Catalase and superoxide dismutase activity, down-regulated by DMBA, was restored by daidzein.

General description

Daidzein is an isoflavone present in soy.[7] It regulates oxidative stress, angiogenesis, cell growth and apoptosis.[8] Daidzein has antioxidant, antiestrogenic and antiatherogenic properties. It provides protection against osteoporosis.[9]

Antioxidants protect biological systems from oxidative damage produced by oxygen-containing free radicals and from redoxactive transition metal ions such as iron, copper, and cadmium.

Serotonin is stored in cells and metabolized by MAO, influencing CNS, GI, and platelet functions.
