Application

L-threonine has been used for the selection of transformed cells.[1] It has also been used to study the effects of amino acids in promoting food consumption in Drosophila melanogaster.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

L-Threonine is an essential amino acid. It is involved in the synthesis of mucin, a protein supporting intestinal function and integrity. L-threonine has a role in the immune system, in O-linked glycosylation, protein phosphorylation and glycine synthesis.[3]

Different cancer cells exhibit altered sensitivity to metformin treatment. Recent studies suggest these findings may be due in part to the common cell culture practice of utilizing high glucose, and when glucose is lowered, metformin becomes increasingly cytotoxic to cancer
