General description
La serotonina è una molecola ubiquitaria presente in tutti gli animali con diversi effetti sul sistema nervoso centrale e periferico (SNC/SNP). La serotonina agisce come ormone e come mitogeno.[4] È prodotta nei terminali assonici presenti nel cervello.[5] Il potenziale d'azione induce il rilascio di serotonina che si diffonde attraverso le sinapsi per attivare i recettori postsinaptici. La serotonina svolge un ruolo cruciale nello sviluppo, nella respirazione, nella termoregolazione, nelle funzioni endocrine, cardiovascolari e gastrointestinali,[5] oltre ad avere un ruolo nei comportamenti di percezione sensoriale come il ciclo sonno-veglia, il sesso, l'umore, la memoria, l'aggressività, la sensibilità al dolore, l'apprendimento e la cognizione.[5] Influisce su diversi disturbi psichiatrici come la schizofrenia, l'anoressia nervosa, la depressione e una serie di disturbi d'ansia come il disturbo ossessivo-compulsivo, gli attacchi di panico e la fobia sociale. Variazioni nei livelli di serotonina sono associate ai disturbi della personalità relativi al controllo degli impulsi, come l'abuso di sostanze, il gioco d'azzardo, il disturbo da deficit di attenzione, il controllo ossessivo e l'aggressività.[6]
